Getting a price
How do you work out the price?
Mostly by the weight of the car and the current scrap metal price, with a bit more for cars that still roll and steer, have all their wheels, and still have their catalytic converter. The price we show is a guide; the collection team confirms it when they see the car.
Will the price change on the day?
Only if the car is different from what you told us, for example the catalytic converter is missing or it won't roll. If that happens the driver will explain the new price before anything is loaded, and you can say no.
How long is my quote valid?
7 days. Scrap metal prices move, so after that we'll re-check it for you.
Why can't I get an instant price for my car?
A few cars are worth more than scrap value or we can't find a weight for them. In that case a person looks at it and calls you back, usually within one working hour.
Paperwork
I haven't got the V5C log book. Can I still scrap the car?
Yes, if you are the registered keeper. The collection team will ask for photo ID and proof of address and will give you a receipt. You then write to DVLA (Swansea SA99 1BD) with the registration, make and model, the date it was scrapped and the name and address of the recycling facility.
What is a Certificate of Destruction?
An official DVLA document issued by the licensed facility that recycles your car. It proves the car has been destroyed and ends your responsibility for it. You'll receive it within 7 days of collection.
The car is on SORN. Does that matter?
No. A SORN car can be scrapped. The recovery truck can move it because it won't be driven on the road.
Can I keep my private number plate?
Yes, but you must take it off the car before it is scrapped. Apply to DVLA to retain or transfer it (form V317 or online) and wait for confirmation before we collect. Once a Certificate of Destruction is issued the plate is lost.
Do I need to tell DVLA myself?
Once the Certificate of Destruction is issued, DVLA is told automatically. Keep your part of the V5C (the yellow V5C/3 slip) and any confirmation, and cancel your insurance and claim any tax refund.
Payment
Why can't I be paid in cash?
Since 2013 it has been illegal in England and Wales to pay cash for scrap metal, including cars. You'll be paid by bank transfer, normally while the driver is still with you. Anyone offering cash is breaking the law.
When will the money arrive?
Transfers from the collection team are usually instant or within a couple of hours. If you've not received it by the end of the next working day, call us.
Does it cost anything?
No. Collection is free and there are no admin fees. We're paid by the recycling partner, not by you.
Collection
Who collects my car?
A licensed, Environment Agency permitted recycling partner based in the area. We arrange the collection and keep you updated; they send the truck, pay you and issue the Certificate of Destruction.
Do I need to be there?
Yes, or someone you trust with the keys, the V5C if you have it, and who can show ID on your behalf. Payment goes to the registered keeper's account.
The car is in a tight spot or on an estate with a height barrier.
Tell us in the booking notes. A smaller truck or a dolly may be needed and it saves a wasted journey.
My car fails ULEZ. Is scrapping my only option?
Not necessarily. If it is roadworthy it may be worth more sold privately or part exchanged. If it isn't, scrapping is usually the quickest and cleanest option. We'll tell you honestly if we think it's worth more than scrap.
